Where to buy apples and orchard produce
Cross Lanes Fruit Farm, Mapledurham, RG4 7UW. Sell 45 varieties of apples, plus plums, pears and soft fruit. Farm shop or PYO. Look out for their Apple Day celebrations when they also produce apple juice, and make apple pies, muffins, and cakes, as well as apple chutneys and jelly. Lambourn Valley Cider, The Malt House, Great Shefford, RG17 7ED, +44(0)1488 648441. Produce cider from apples (using mostly cooking apples but also some dessert and cider varieties) sourced from orchards and gardens around Newbury, and the orchards of the Benedictine Monastery at Douai. Perry is available in several varieties one from the fruit of a very old pear tree in Kingsclere, probably Oldfield, which has recently been used to graft new trees of the same variety. And single variety ciders are available. Sold locally at the Angel Inn, Hungerford, the Swan Inn, Lower Inkpen, and Sheepdrove Organic Farm in Lambourn. And further afield. The New Road Cyderists in Twyford buy or beg fruit from as many of their neighbours as they can for their annual pressing in their garage. They have also produced a book 'Apples Berkshire Cider' an A-Z of fruitful things in Berkshire. Prior’s Tipple cider made by Englefield Organic Growers of Reading is sold locally and at The Retreat pub in the city (which also holds a cider and beer festival), where it is known as Pokey, after the description on the label "quite pokey". The cider is actually made from apples from Englefield’s orchards in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire.
