The Small and Unsung : Shelters

Architect Ian McChesney working in collaboration with engineers Atelier One have designed a series of rotating wind shelters for Blackpool's south shore promenade (pictured below). The shelters are designed to rotate into the prevailing wind direction providing a constant source of shelter. The shelters will be a composite structure of stainless steel similar in structural principle to an aircraft wing, a degree of flexibility will be incorporated causing the tails to vibrate in gusts.

These were designed by Bauman Lyons Architects working with sound artists Greyworld and performance artists Forced Entertainment. Little wind machines secure energy to heat the seating in these exciting red landmark structures.
Bauman Lyons also refurbished the South Foreshore Promenade at Bridlington, Yorkshire. You can read more about their work on their web-site.
